Potential Winners Singled Out! ditulis oleh Gumbira none Komen

In this week’s elimination, Aliff Aziz who is currently serving his National Service opened the stage with his latest song, ‘Boom Boom Boom’. As how I had mentioned for Group B’s performance, I’m confident that this week’s results will be determined by votes. Nevertheless, I’m expecting Firuz and Nasriah to be voted out.

Kicking the barrage of criticisms, Khai refused to comment on which group had performed better. He did however, state that the first group was very disappointing and there was no honesty in their acting. They didn’t look convincing when they came across someone who’s been shot and gave the impression that it looks a lot more like they had come across a dead cat. He further mentions that with no urgency, there will be no conflict resulting in no drama. He also further commented that in the past four weeks that he’s been observing, the only time contestants look very honest and sincere is when they have their heads on the chopping block and are receiving their results.

Khai felt that the second group was ‘The Best’ and singled out Syirah and Diana as potential winners. He found Group 3 to be ‘so-so’. He liked the first part of the performance but after the fall, he was disappointed with Firuz who looked like he was reading the news.

Rilla then agreed to say that there was significant improvement in Group B’s acting quality. She then singled out Syirah and Erwin as potential winners. Rilla mentioned that Syirah’s acting quality is good and that she has managed to grasp her own techniques, not influenced by any type of method acting. Rilla particularly made a stress on ‘Reality Check’ to all contestants who check their Facebook ‘Fan Page’. She comments that there is a thin line between being inviting and begging due to overexposure as home viewers are already seeing a lot of contestants with two shows per week. Rilla ended off by saying that she can see from today who really wants to act and who just wants attention from the acting.  Brutal truth!

Ariati gave a slightly different comment as she found similarity between the two groups in terms of lack of understanding of script. She also mentioned and reiterated the point that contestants need to work as a team. She stressed that contestants need to learn how to control their expression, particularly the eyes and lips as slight changes in these could give a different impression especially when the camera zooms in.

With the comments above, the bottom 4 for this week are Ariff, Fadzli, Jasmine and Nasriah. I’m surprised that Fadzli, Ariff and Jasmine were chosen to be in the bottom 4 given that they have put up credible performances deserving of better results but then again, votes count a lot too. Nasriah once again, in the bottom pit and leaving Anugerah Skrin this week is Ariff and Jasmine.

It’s getting really hard to predict who will be out next as weeks roll by but hopefully when the groups combine for the quarter-finals, it’ll be easier to make better judgement calls on who deserves to be sent home as fast as possible. Seriously, home viewers voting which counts for 50% could really sway the judges results. I think it’ll be better maybe if the judges could give their comments after watching the performances than to wait till the results show because home viewers who know nuts would probably be voting for the most good looking performer rather than the whole package speaking of which, if you don’t have the package, then you better go find someway to get that package or you won’t survive long in the industry.

Have I told you how much I love how the judges gave their comments for this episode?

Huge Improvements for Group A Boys in Week 3 ditulis oleh Gumbira none Komen

Having been disappointed by performances in the first week, I was looking forward towards interesting and surprising acts from this group as they have had the priviledge to observe their fellow competitors in Group B.

I don’t think I had to wait long when the first group took to the screen with their performance. Set in an idyllic setting somewhere near the coast, I’m guessing it’s Sembawang near Masjid Kampung Wak Hassan, our fellow competitors were locked up in a heated argument over several issues with the first being the location followed by who had issued the invitation and lastly, about what had happened to one of the characters.

At this stage of the competition, I’m not sure if Razie is able to carry off different roles because everytime he speaks, he looks like a typical ‘abang-abang’ even when he’s just delivering normal tone dialogues. His body and facial expression makes him look as if he’s always out to fight or perhaps he’s just uncomfortable to relax and assume a different character. Mariah who was the stalwart in the first week, once again managed to deliver a very convincing performance but perhaps fell short of a performance better than her first. I can’t help but notice if Mariah is going to get all the lead characters in the next episodes to come because tonight was another night where her character was the focus of attention. Maybe this could be looked into to give others the opportunity to anchor such roles?

Nissa was definitely better this week and I cannot help but notice the uncanny similarity between her and Elfaeza Ul-Haq in terms of physical appearance. I am however puzzled at how to link Nissa with the sweet girl who’s not because she definitely didn’t cut the sweet look right from the start of the performance unless it was only made in reference to how she was ‘made up’. Dzar was also much better this week and had also delivered himself well convincingly enough as the innocently evil guy. He does however, could work more on his facial expression to appear really convincing.

Overall, I’d say that this was a commendable performance. It wasn’t that bad nor was it horrible to say the least. There was a good balance of chemistry and banter of dialogues between this group.

With the end of the first group, more was expected of the second group. Their performance started out with Halimah running away from Shahril in the woods which was quite funny to me actually because they none of them looked like they had ran through the woods because there were too clean! I’m not sure who to blame for Halimah’s unconvincing knee injury because there wasn’t any blood or cuts but Halimah certainly didn’t convince me at ‘Ouch!’. She retracted her leg really fast for someone who was in pain with her knee!

I’m particularly very confused with what Fahmy was supposed to be. He didn’t look humane enough nor did he look like a police officer throughout the entire performance except for the scene where he admitted he was a police inspector. The rest of his performance were simply too heroic looking that perhaps was simply unconvincing. Fahmy didn’t look sympathetic nor did he have any reaction when Halimah ran towards him asking for assistance. It looks abit tangkap handsome. Even as a cool police officer, he probably needed to win a bit of favours from both sides with how he spoke and reacted. I have never remembered not flinching when a knife is brandished. A police officer, no matter how heroic would have assumed a slightly more defensive stance to protect himself.

Shahril though, was an absolute wonder to watch as the psychotic looking murderer. He was perhaps the best performer in this performance with his emotions and expressions delivered really well and deserves to be in the next round.

With two performances done, the last one had better impress me and they sure did! It was perhaps the most convincing performance of the three for the night in my opinion with a few minor hiccups. Idris when he started looked like he had never drove a car before. He looked to static in his seat with his right arm looking extremely decapitated but he was definitely perfect to me for the rest of the performance. Idris managed to maintain good emotions, expression and voice control throughout his performance. Well done Idris!

Biwa had a few on and off moments in the beginning especially when she started off well in the car only to suddenly had a change of expression and voice intonation from worried to angry/ sarcastic. She was however, good throughout the rest as the jealous girl. Sakinah was in my opinion the weakest link for this group, she had too many moments where she lost her focus as someone who was shot and dying. There’s a lot to name and to begin was definitely her eyes. Her eyes gave away her lost of focus several times right from the start when she was about to be carried off, to the time when she was being carried out where she kept looking to her left and then when she was lying on the ground and about to die.

Sakinah also had inconsistency in her speech as someone dying but nonetheless, this was perhaps in my opinion, the best performance tonight. If asked to judge, I’d say that Idris was perhaps the best performer tonight. Congrats to all and all the best for your results!

I hope those of you reading this will make proper judgement calls to vote for talent!

Better Potential For Group B In Week 2 ditulis oleh Gumbira none Komen

In tonight’s episode of Anugerah Skrin, Group B took to the screen to front what they’ve got. Three groups of four, three performances on romance and here are the reviews.

Group 1 performed by Syirah, Aidil, Aziela and Erwin had an emotional romance/ love script as was the previous week. Starting Group B off, the main characters in this performance was Aidil and Aziela who were playing an arguing couple with Erwin as Aziela’s brother and Syirah as Aziela’s friend. Aidil started off well but soon lost his facial expression momentarily but managed to maintain good emotions. Aziela as his girlfriend was supposed to look like a naïve girlfriend but she looked more like a confused girlfriend as her facial expression didn’t really show that she looked naïve. Syirah as the friend didn’t have many lines to play with but nevertheless managed to put up a respectable performance overall. Erwin as perhaps the most good looking guy in the competition was playing Aziela’s brother had a lot of uncertainty written on his face when he didn’t have any lines to speak. I wasn’t too convinced with him as his brother as he wasn’t as protective as how a brother should.

Group 2 performed by Nasriah, Firuz, Jasmine and Ariff had a pretty good performance. Ariff as the main character playing the role of a male chauvinistic playboy had an imbalance of emotions throughout his performance and really needs to work on his body language. There were certain scenes where he looked extremely rigid and rooted to his spot when his body should be moving with the direction of his speech. Nasriah, the only female who wears a hijab in the competition was surprisingly a good performer who managed to maintain good emotions even when she didn’t have any lines. Jasmine as the Ariff’s ex-girlfriend didn’t manage to convince me that she was the played out ex-girlfriend who wanted to advice another girl. She just didn’t have enough emotions and feel in her character. Firuz, playing the role of Jasmine’s husband, seemed really funny at times when his wife was getting abused hurled at her. He also at times failed to maintain good facial expression and also I felt had a lack of emotions when he conveyed his lines.

The final group performed by Diana, Alfhian, Sarah and Fadzli was a lot more on friendship rather than romance. Diana who’s character was accused of being in a relationship with Fadzli put up quite an impressive performance and managed to give out good facial expression as well as emotions. Sarah, the highlight of this performance, was pretty good actually in being the girlfriend who felt cheated of her friendship with the rest. Sarah controlled her emotions well and also expressed good facial expression. She does need to work on her body expression however as it does seem a bit rigid and also needs to work on her voice. Fadzli, playing the role of Sarah’s boyfriend was perhaps the weakest of the four. Very often I caught his eyes shifting focus and attention which was a real distraction. This was otherwise, the best performance amongst the 3 groups.

My take for this week, the boys definitely outperformed the girls this week! Then again, could it be how the performers have been matched?

Aisyah & Md Nur First Two To Go For First Round ditulis oleh Gumbira none Komen

You’ve seen them perform, voted and judges have given their input. Group A’s performance screened on Tuesday was definitely a forgettable performance with the exception of just one, Mariah. The rest definitely didn’t stand out at all.

The resident judges, Khairudin Samsudin and Rilla Melati together with guest judge, Keatar HM, watched their performances and gave their reviews, which was a close reflection of what I had given earlier.

Khairudin mentioned that the contestant performances were not convicing with no variation in speech, intonation and movements. Rilla said that there didn’t possess anything special, no X-Factor and were probably not serious as this was still early in the competition. She also said that the contestants had a lot to work on especially on their speech as very often, it wasn’t audible or clear. Keatar commented that the contestants are still very raw and new and therefore needs to spend time practising in front of the mirror. He also said that all of them were of equal talent, meaning not outstanding.

So, those in the bottom 6 were Razie, Sakinah, Md Nur, Halimah, Idris and Aisyah.

The comments from the judges were:

Razie – “…has a typecast face because of his natural angry facial expression even though his expresses them differently”

Sakinah – “Not interesting”

Md Nur – “Too overbearing”

Halimah – “…chosen because of looks”

Idris – “too tensed”

Aisyah – “too cool (expressionless)”

Eventually,  Aisyah and Md Nur were the ones to leave the competition. They were both in the 3rd set performance. Recall from my review, “The guys again didn’t look outstanding at all, sounded very fake with their lines. Halimah and Aisyah though could have done better. There was definitely a lack of chemistry between all four”.

So, the rest of the contestants from Group A strive on with their journey. I’d seriously suggest they heed the judges and work on hearing themselves and looking at how they look like in the mirror whilst reading their lines.

Coming Tuesday will be Group B’s turn, let’s hope that it will be a much better performance!

And ohh.. Tengku Adil sounded quiet flat with his singing earlier too!

Anugerah Skrin Returns With New Format ditulis oleh Gumbira none Komen

Anugerah Skrin makes a comeback in search for fresh-faced actors. The series will be hosted by Suzairhe Sumari alongside with Huda Ali, the female winner of Anugerah Skrin 2006. Shahril Wahid, the male winner of Anugerah Skrin 2006, will complete the list of hosts for the competition.  Returning with a brand new format, Anugerah Skrin aims to bring out the best of the shortlisted, with various acting syllables and in depth learning in 11 weeks and that’s no mean feat!

Auditions have been held for two consecutive days on 20th March and over 200 participants were present. 24 aspiring actors have been shortlisted to continue their journey to be the next Anugerah Skrin Champions. Two winners, one male and one female Champion will get $5000 cash each, roles in Suria’s programmes, a movie produced by KRU Studios, a special teledrama produced by MediaCorp Eaglevision, as well as an opportunity to be involved in English productions.

Contestants will be asked to act in different drama genres and paired up with several experienced actors.  Another new feature would be the presence of  2 established actors who act as their mentors – Seri Wahyuni Jaes who is also a TV scriptwriter and Sani Husin, who is currently an Arts educator.

It took two years for previous Skrin Champions Huda Ali, and Shahril Wahid to appear as cameo in Datuk Yusof Haslam’s KL Drift 1.  How long will it take this time?  According to Group Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer International of KRU Studios,  Dr Shireen M. Hashim, several TV dramas and films have been planned in store for the upcoming winners and it definitely won’t take a long time for that to happen.

This year’s resident judges are Khairudin Samsudin and Rilla Melati Bahri alongside with a new guest judge every week.  The judges will analyze their acting skills through a drama segment which will be televised on Tuesdays at 8.30pm.   Moving forward, judge Rilla Melati reiterated that it is important for the contestants to have more than just passion and to be part of the industry with pride.

The drama segment will be telecast at 8.30pm every Tuesday and LIVE show will be held every Friday, which will also be the Results Show.  The challenge?  Contestants will only be given 1 rehearsal and 1 take for the drama segment.

Winners will be selected based on 50% by judges and 50% through votes. Audience can vote from Tuesday 8.30pm to Friday at 6pm the same week. Every week, 2 contestants will be eliminated until the Top 6 are chosen to the Grand Finals.  Only 2 winners (1 female and 1 male contestant) will be crowned as the Champions of Anugerah Skrin 2010.

Anugerah Skrin will make its debut LIVE on Tuesday, 4 May 2010 at 8.30pm on Suria.
